BMW presented the further developed version of the B58 engine at the 27th Aachen Colloquium for Vehicle and Engine Technology. The new petrol engine is offered in two power levels, each with 340hp in the middle and 388hp in the upper power stage. The core components such as the displacement (2997 cc) and the bore (82 mm) of the Reihensechser remained largely the same as the predecessor engine.

The main innovation can be found in the individual optimized components, the weight savings and the consumption optimization. With new injectors and a new engine management, more power and torque with less fuel consumption are to be achieved. A total weight reduction of 6 kg was achieved on the engine block, cylinder head and one-piece chain drive.

For the first time, a split-cooling system is to be used on the new B57. Thus, two separate cooling circuits are realized in each case for the engine block and for the cylinder head, whereby an optimal and more targeted cooling of the engine parts can be realized. This increases the efficiency of the entire engine and thus reduces fuel consumption.

What does this have to do with the new Supra A90?

On all previous photos, the motor we saw in Madrid, as well as the last engine seen at the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft , we saw the already well-known B58 engine. On the most recently published parts database for the Supra A90, the engine with the part number B58B30C can be found. Similarly, the announced by Toyota at the Copenhagen meeting held 340 horsepower with the version of the B58 agreed.

Three points speak for the use of the new B58 in the new Supra. On the one hand, the engine should be used in the co-developed BMW Z4, but the much more interesting details can be found in the technical updates as well as the parts database of the Supra A90. Despite the still relatively misleading ending part number B58 B30C for the engine, the explosion drawing for the A90 shows only a timing chain between Nochenwellenräder and crankshaft (see picture above). In the previous B58 engine, a timing chain is used at the top and bottom.

Furthermore, the exhaust manifold should be integrated directly on the engine head of the 340 bhp powerful B58, which can also be seen in this version from the exploded view of the A90.

The performance data are of course standard values of the new engine. Quite possible that these will differ on the new Supra A90. With an original output of 340 hp / 388 hp and a weight of approximately 1500 kg, the new Supra with its very low center of gravity and active chassis becomes a real fun car.
